Exploring the Future of Digital Democracy at KIT

A member of the Perycles consortium contributed to an inspiring event on the topic of digital democracy at the TRIANGLE workspace of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The gathering brought together KIT students, experts, and engaged participants to explore how digital tools can strengthen democratic processes—both in society and within the university itself.

In a vibrant and collaborative atmosphere, we discussed the challenges and opportunities of digital approaches to enhancing democracy. The conversation was grounded in the context of KIT, focusing on how digital tools could be implemented to improve democratic participation among students. A highlight of the event was the formulation, deliberation, and voting on a set of hypotheses aimed at improving democratic institutions. These hypotheses will inform the research of the Perycles consortium

The main discussion topics were developed in a participatory process with students from the Future of Democracy seminar, in collaboration with experts and supported by a specially developed chatbot designed to facilitate democratic engagement.

A special focus group, led by Michael Mäs from the Perycles consortium, explored how online social networks can be leveraged to foster more effective democratic deliberation among students.

Here is the website of the event and here is the website of KIT’s Digital Democracy Project, which enables students to develop key skills in the field of digital democracy.

We’re grateful to everyone who contributed to this meaningful exchange and look forward to continuing the conversation on how digital innovation can shape the future of democracy.
